Podcast Listener Psychographics: The Data Behind the Trust
Podcast advertising lives or dies on one thing: whether the audience trusts the voice delivering your message. And the data on podcast listener psychographics is unambiguous. Eighty percent of the most active podcast listeners trust the ads they hear on their shows, according to Sounds Profitable’s 2025 Advertising Landscape study, which surveyed more than 5,000 Americans across every major ad-supported medium. No other channel came close.
The question for brands is not whether podcast listeners are receptive. They are. The question is which shows reflect their values closely enough to make that trust transfer to your brand.
Why Demographics Miss the Point
Podcast listener demographics tell part of the story. Edison Research’s 2024 Podcast Consumer report found that 56% of monthly listeners have household incomes above $75,000, versus 48% of the general US population. And 49% are college-educated, compared to 44% nationally. Those numbers matter for budget planning.
But demographics tell you who is listening. Psychographics tell you why they respond.
A 2025 SiriusXM Media Podsurvey found that 52% of podcast listeners say their shows feel like a reflection of their values, interests, and identity. Not entertainment. Not background noise. A reflection of who they are. Another 44% say podcasts connect them to a community of like-minded people.
This changes the targeting question. You are not placing an ad in front of a demographic bucket. You are entering a community that already knows what it values, and choosing whether your brand fits there.
The Trust That Demographics Cannot Buy
Podcast audiences develop something advertising rarely gets for free: genuine trust in the voice delivering the message.
The SiriusXM Podsurvey found that 49% of podcast listeners feel a deeper connection to podcast hosts than to personalities in other media. Nearly half describe hosts as potential friends. This is the parasocial relationship that host-read podcast advertising runs on. The listener has invested hours, sometimes years, in getting to know a host. When that host endorses a brand, the recommendation arrives through the same channel as the show’s own content.
The result is not just attention. It is belief.
Edison Research and Ad Results Media’s Super Listeners study found that 53% of the most active podcast listeners hold a more positive opinion of companies that advertise on shows they regularly follow. And 56% say hearing an ad on a podcast makes them more likely to purchase, compared to hearing the same brand advertised elsewhere.

That trust extends to recall, too. The same Sounds Profitable research found that 86% of the most active podcast listeners remember hearing a podcast ad in the past week. That is the highest ad recall of any ad-supported medium tested, ahead of television, AM/FM radio, YouTube, and social platforms. Podcast ads are not being skipped or tuned out. They are being retained.
Listeners Who Act, Not Just Hear
High trust and high recall translate directly into action, and the action data is among the most compelling in media research.
Acast’s Podcast Pulse 2024, fielded by Edison Research across 1,031 US adults, found that 88% of all podcast listeners have taken some measurable action after hearing a podcast ad, whether that means researching a product, visiting a website, using a promo code, or making a purchase. Among daily listeners, the figure rises to 92%.
Edison Research’s 2024 Podcast Consumer report found that 46% of weekly podcast listeners have purchased a product or service directly as a result of a podcast ad. Not browsed. Not searched. Purchased.
For brands used to measuring response rates in the single digits from social and display campaigns, these figures call for a different mental model. Podcast listeners are an active audience. They are consuming with their full attention, not scrolling past.
Audio Primes: The Listeners Brands Are Really After
Not all podcast listeners are equally engaged, and understanding the spectrum matters for how you target.
Sounds Profitable’s Audio Primes 2026 research identifies a specific segment: the 22% of podcast consumers who listen to at least 75% of their content in audio format. These Audio Primes are younger on average, higher-earning, and, critically, they are the discovery engine for the broader podcast community. What they hear, they share. Brands that land well with Audio Primes often see organic lift through word-of-mouth that never shows up in campaign attribution.
This is why host-read ads at scale compound differently than display advertising at scale. An impression is not just an impression when it reaches someone who will talk about it.
What Psychographics Mean for How You Buy
The practical implication of podcast listener psychographics is that show selection is audience selection. You are not buying a slot. You are buying entry into a values-aligned community.
A show about personal finance attracts listeners who are actively thinking about money and spending decisions. A wellness show attracts people willing to invest in their health. A business show attracts people building something. The content shapes the listener, and the listener shapes how they respond to your ad.
The brands that perform best in podcast advertising spend as much time thinking about show alignment as they do about CPM. Wildcast’s Audience Finder is built around this logic: match your brand to the shows where the right listener already lives, so the host’s trust transfers naturally to your message.
That kind of match is what the demographic data points toward but cannot actually deliver. Psychographic alignment is what closes the gap.
